From the Chapter Director
Dear NCBI Family –
In this season of gratitude, I’m grateful for the tremendous gift of friends and allies. Those amazing organizations and coalitions that advocate for our neighborhoods and communities; those committed, loving and courageous individuals who consistently show up and stand up for inclusion, equity and justice. It is an honor to work alongside you. I’m grateful for our generous donors (see 2021 list below) and Friends of NCBI, who encourage us and partner in this work. I’m grateful for our wonderful Board members – current and past – who have been wise, dedicated and unfailingly supportive of the organization and of me.  I’m grateful for our capable and creative Chapter Administrator, who makes everything run smoothly, and for the many volunteers who have set up and led workshops, raised money, represented NCBI in the community and much more. I’m grateful for everyone who has participated in NCBI Community Conversations and other programs, as we break down barriers, build skills and strengthen allyship against racism and all forms of oppression. I hope to see you at the January 22 workshop.
As you may have heard, I will be leaving my role as Chapter Director in a few months. After nearly 30 years, this will be a big transition both for me and for NCBI. I will still be around, and hope to continue supporting the local Chapter and the national organization for a long time to come. I will still be doing the work that I love, but from a different vantage point, with both new and long-time partners. I’m also looking forward to spending more time with my family and enjoying this beautiful place in which we live. I’m excited to see who fills the Chapter Director role next, and how they will make it their own. Please share this job announcement with people who may be interested in this opportunity for expanding  coalition in our local community.  Chapter Director Job Announcement
Thank you for your support and encouragement. I wish you and yours the best of the season, and may we all move farther along the road to equity, justice and peace in the New Year.
With love and gratitude,
Sue
From Our Board President
Dear NCBI Friends,
We’ve made it through another year, challenged by the pandemic and continuing social and economic injustice. We’ve lost some of our dear friends and family and yet we persevere, committed to bringing equity and inclusion to our community.
Thank you to everyone who made a contribution to NCBI, attended and/or led an NCBI workshop or other event, spread the word about NCBI and worked to better our world. Special thanks to our amazing Chapter Director, Sue Parris, who has devoted herself to NCBI for nearly 30 years. While she will step down from that role, we are grateful that she will continue to work with NCBI both locally and internationally.
We hope to see you next year at our first virtual event of 2022, American Indians 101.
With hopes for a healthy and peaceful new year,
Elena
In Memoriam
At this is a time of year in particular, we celebrate those who are with us, and feel the absence of  those who are with us no longer. In 2021, we lost these individuals, who made a huge impact on our community and beyond:
  • Rosie Edwards, founding NCBI Board member, educator and writer.
  • Cheryl Joseph, teacher, Advisor of first NCBI team at Marina High School
  • Jan Knippers-Black, MIIS professor, human rights activist and long-time NCBI supporter
  • Gerry Low-Sabado, Community Preservationist, 5th Generation Chinese Fishing Village Descendant, enthusiastic Friend of NCBI
Community Conversations:
American Indians 101
Dr. Rebecca Hernandez
According to a recent study by the Native run nonprofit IllumiNatives, 87% of United States schools don’t cover Native American history beyond 1900. So, it’s not surprising that many non-Natives hold biases and misinformation, and that Native people are often stereotyped or made invisible.
Join us for American Indians 101, an introductory presentation about American Indians in the United States. It includes information about tribes, treaties, tribal governance, tribal enrollment, reservations, and current issues in Indian country.
January 22, 2022 10AM – 12PM via Zoom. This event is free, but pre-registration is required. Please register HERE.
Rebecca Hernandez, PhD is Warm Springs/Mescalero Apache and her academic expertise is in American Studies with a concentration in American Indian Studies and Visual Culture. Dr. Hernandez is currently the Director of the American Indian Resource Center at UC Santa Cruz, where she is focused on the retention of Native students and developing programs that promote a better understanding of American Indian culture(s) and lifeways at UCSC.
