Dear Friend of NCBI,
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered many aspects of our lives, including the work of NCBI. We have had to make changes in our plans and programming, but we have adapted. Thanks to your support, NCBI remains steadfast and continues to confront racism and other forms of oppression.
As the pandemic waxes and wanes we continue to monitor the situation. We will explore opportunities to return to in-person programming, but only when we can ensure the safety of all involved.
Of course, the pandemic has exposed new inequities and highlighted existing ones. The work of NCBI is more important than ever before.
Here is what one of our community partners had to say:
“The Coalition for Asian Justice strongly endorses the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) in its effort to build hopeful environments to welcome diversity, healing to change the world, being effective allies and empowering leaders to lead. We share with NCBI a goal to eliminate every form of oppression and intolerance including irresponsible and xenophobic rhetoric and welcome the opportunity to join with them in our mission to achieve social change.”
— The Coalition for Asian Justice
Your dedication to NCBI and ongoing financial support help keep the spirit of racial and social justice alive. Your donations are important for our programs to remain accessible to all members of our community.
The following highlights some of NCBI Monterey County’s work from 2021:
|
- Early in 2021, NCBI Monterey County sponsored a 3-day, regional forum on Anti-Black Racism: Transforming Allyship. This important event was attended by more than 70 people from education, health care and community organizations, and was followed by a meeting to support individuals’ action and allyship plans.
- NCBI facilitators provided training and coaching for community organizations, sponsored by Center for Nonprofit Excellence, to support nonprofit leaders making positive change for racial and social inequity.
- In April, NCBI and Whites for Racial Equity co-sponsored A Timeline of Race & Equity in Monterey County, researched, designed and presented by Luis Xago Juarez.
|
- We continued our popular series, CommUNITY Conversations, to examine anti-Semitism (led by Richard Moss, Bill Lutz, La Verne Baker Leyva, Caroline Haskell, and Elena Loomis) and Islamophobia (led by Nashwan Hamza and Zahra Billoo), increasing understanding and allyship.
|
- NCBI co-sponsored Monterey Public Library’s Books to Action month, centering on Isabel Wilkerson’s book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent.
- NCBI leaders Pheroze Karai and Sue Parris participated in a Task Force to address equity and inclusion in Pacific Grove.
- Throughout the year, NCBI has partnered with social justice organizations throughout Monterey County, including The Village Project, CSUMB, MILPA, Community Alliance for Racial Equity, NAACP, PRIDE Salinas Valley and PRIDE Monterey Peninsula, as well as the Coalition for Asian Justice and others working to end race-based violence towards Asians and Asian-Americans.
We thank you in advance for renewing your membership as a Friend of NCBI, and for your contribution to keeping racial and social justice at the forefront within our community.
In the spirit of community,
NCBI Monterey County Board of Directors
Ben Bruce, Brian Corpening, Elena Loomis, Pheroze Karai, Vanessa Romero, Jesse Tamayo, Dirrick Williams
