Vision and Mission

NCBI Monterey County is dedicated to ending discrimination, oppression, and intolerance of every kind.

We bring people together across group lines including race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability and class. We provide training and education in schools and the community to increase understanding, promote acceptance, and reduce prejudice. We collaborate with public and private organizations to nurture leadership for social justice and provide opportunities for healing from the impact of oppression.

“The mission and work of NCBI is even more necessary today.  I thought eventually groups like this would work themselves out of business. It hasn’t happened yet, although I see signs that there have been real improvement.  NCBI made a real difference in how I perceive the world.”
— Sharon Miller

NCBI member from first leadership training in 1993

Message from the Chapter Director
Healing into Action. The phrase comes from Washington, DC NCBI leader Larry Bell. The words describe beautifully the NCBI foundational principle that in order to move toward social justice, we must take action to change institutions while at the same time seeking healing from the harsh and destructive effects that oppression has had on our own lives. In addition, we know that we need to hear the stories of people who have experienced racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamaphobia, classism, adultism, ableism, etc. as part of that healing. In doing so, we also become better Allies to others.

In 2014, there were many occasions to celebrate: Same-sex couples can now legally wed in 35+ states; there was some movement on rights for immigrants, progress on rights for people with disabilities; and more. There were also stark and painful markers in our long history of racism that gained national and worldwide attention. We ache for lives lost and lives disrupted, while knowing that these are not the first such occurrences, just the most recent and widely covered. (For important perspective on community-police relationships, and resources offered by NCBI, see the article by Ben Jealous in the Huffington Post.)

I am deeply grateful for the many individuals — in education, advocacy organizations, human services, law enforcement, faith organizations and other fields — who are working to make our community and world safer, more respectful, inclusive and just. I am proud that NCBI works in partnership with some of those individuals and groups, and look forward to deepening those relationships and partnering with others as well.

Each of us has the ability to be leaders for change. With support and healing, we are stronger leaders; working in coalition, even more effective. May the coming year bring us all opportunities for Healing into Action.

With hope and determination,

Sue Parris, Chapter Director
