NCBI has had a busy start to this year, including our
“Recommitting to End Racism” project, which was supported by generous donors to our Monterey County Gives Campaign. We have held two community workshops in this series prompted by the terrible murders in Charleston and sadly so many other racially based deaths. Our kick-off event, held on Jan. 30th, was an encore presentation of the successful
“Coming Together for Racial and Social Justice” workshop.

Combined Destinies Workshop

By Evelyn Kahan
Saturday, March 12, a multi-racial/ethnic group of 24 attended an exciting and thoughtful workshop based on a book entitled COMBINED DESTINIES: WHITES SHARING GRIEF ABOUT RACISM edited and authored by NCBI’s own Ann Todd Jealous and Carolyn T. Haskell.  Workshop participants had read two specific chapters (made available by download) from the book before arriving on Saturday.  The afternoon began with two focus pieces: Sue Parris and J.T. Mason each read their short yet powerful writings from the book. Armed with all that, we were launched directly into the heart of an experience.

Recommitting to End Racism
Training Series continues through 2016
Following recent and ongoing violence against African Americans and other people of color, in particular the killings in Charleston, South Carolina, NCBI began presenting a series of workshops, “Recommitting to End Racism,”  addressing racism and other forms of oppression. We are providing a space for people to heal from the wounds of discrimination and generate action steps that they can take to help end racism.  Please make sure you are on our email list in order to receive announcements and Follow us on Facebook for updates.

Carmel High School NCBI leaders went to

Dr. Timoteo Vasquez, a friend of both Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, and father of one our members, Maya Vasquez.

Recognizing Young Leaders

“… NCBI showed us that there are other people like us, and together we can make our voices even bigger.
I felt blessed to receive the scholarship from them. I worked so hard for what I believe in, and it was gift from the lovely family of NCBI. And I promise, I won’t ever stop fighting.”
