NCBI Monterey County is dedicated to ending discrimination, oppression, and intolerance of every kind.
We bring people together across group lines including race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability and class. We provide training and education in schools and the community to increase understanding, promote acceptance, and reduce prejudice. We collaborate with public and private organizations to nurture leadership for social justice and provide opportunities for healing from the impact of oppression.

In his first few months with us, new Chapter Administrator Steven Goings (who joined us on Sept 9th, 2013) chaired a Seaside voting rights march for the NAACP, helped develop and deliver a Safe Zone training for CSUMB faculty in support of LGBTQ students and organized a History of Seaside (left) community dialogue with NCBI Service Learning student Lucia Giroux and facilitated by NCBI President Elena Loomis and NCBI Chapter Director Sue Parris. Inaugural NCBI High School Student Leader Mixer:
NCBI’s Carmel High Club President Lyla Warren suggested that the NCBI Training of Trainers participants gather together throughout the academic year. The first mixer took place on Saturday November 23rd. NCBI students from Marina, Palma, & Carmel High schools pizza and talked about the challenges they face when attempting to get their peers involved with diversity programming, how to address apathetic attitudes and methods of encouraging more participation from Advisors and club members. 
The teens have decided to collaborate with Marina High and support their Martin Luther King Jr. program. The next gathering will take place after Seaside’s MLK March,( Monday January 20th) NCBI students will “represent” by wearing their school gear and colors. See you there!

Human Rights Day Luncheon
 On Dec 7th, in honor of the 65th anniversary of Universal Declaration on Human Rights, NCBI co-sponsored the Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nation Association’s annual Human Rights Day Luncheon at the Monterey Elks Lodge. It was an inspiring event and many fine human rights activists, including several NCBI members, have been honored at the event over the years with the Baha’i Human Rights Award. This year’s honoree was the extraordinary Dr. Jan Knippers Black a professor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, author of The Politics of Human Rights Protection (among others), and member of the Amnesty International’s Board of Directors, Congratulations Jan!

Many NCBI-trained leaders are engaged in diversity and equity projects in their own spheres of influence, e.g., campaigns to protect voting rights; organizing allies to witness criminal justice proceedings; responding to racist incidents and hostile environments in schools; initiating conversations about racism, power and privilege in work and campus settings, and more.

Students Gain Diversity Leadership Tools
Over 60 students and advisers from Carmel, Marina, Palma, San Lorenzo Valley high schools and CSU Monterey Bay participated in a two-day Diversity Leaders Training. The training helps to prepare students to lead Welcoming Diversity workshops for their peers, and to act as resources for diversity issues at school and in their communities. Many thanks to the students, staff and volunteers who contributed their time and effort, and to Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation and the City of Seaside Mayor’s Youth Fund, for financial support that made the training possible.
