Coming Together for Racial & Social Justice

Background: Following recent race-based violence, in particular the killings in Charleston, South Carolina, our local community came together at a vigil where participants were exhorted to re-commit ourselves to doing WHATEVER it takes to turn the tide and stamp out racism once and for all and to support local organizations that fight for the elimination of any and all forms of oppression and discrimination.  In response, NCBI is presenting a series of workshops addressing racism and other forms of oppression. We will provide a space for people to heal from the wounds of discrimination and generate action steps that they can take to help end racism. That action might take the form of working with youth, interrupting and being a witness when injustice occurs, or being an ally in the fight to end oppression.  A first step could be attending the workshops.

The first workshop in our 2016 series, Recommitting to End Racism, will be an encore presentation of an event we did in November. That training was so successful that we would like to give additional individuals an opportunity to attend as a foundation for additional anti-racism and nonviolence trainings planned for 2016. People who attended the November session are also welcome to attend and repeat the experience with a new group.

Join with community members to look at key issues of racial and social justice in Monterey County and learn how to be an effective Ally to address those issues. Facilitated by NCBI Monterey County, and co-sponsored by Monterey Peace & Justice Center and NAACP Monterey County Branch.

This free workshop will include:

  • Identifying and welcoming social identities present today (race, class, gender, LGBTQ, religion, age, etc.)
  • An overview of Allyship and priviledge
  • Brainstorming local issues. Where do you notice racial injustice in this county?
  • Where/what issues do you want to engage as an ally? What issues do you want to invite others in as allies?
  • Next steps – Resources and opportunities for involvement with local groups (NCBI anti-racism series; Monterey Peace & Justsice Center nonviolence training; NAACP working committees; #BlackLivesMatter Seaside; Stand Up for Racial Justice Santa Cruz; and more.)

There is no charge to attend (donations are welcome). Preregistration is required.
