2019 Friends
Thanks to your support, NCBI continues to address tension, discrimination and inequity in our community and beyond. Here is some of the good work your contribution helped to produce this year to date:CommUNITY Conversations continued, with Finding Common Ground; What Stands Between Us; and a viewing of “The Latino List” followed by facilitated discussion.Support for students and faculty at Monterey High School following racist social media incidents. We are now working with district administration to build NCBI teams in all MPUSD high schools in the coming school year.Training and facilitation, in partnership with National Compadres Network, for Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, connected to the Towards Equity in Monterey County Project.10th Annual Walk of Remembrance for the Chinese Fishing Village in Pacific Grove, where we facilitated discussions about Ally-ship.NCBI Community Chapter and the Campus Affiliate at CSUMB collaborated on training for homeless youth in Salinas.Facilitated discussion on Social Change and Community Activism for Sociology classes at Hartnell College.NCBI also co-sponsored or supported many community events, including the Women’s March; PRIDE Monterey Peninsula; the Seaside march honoring Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.; a vigil for immigrant rights, and more.Following a recent community workshop, here’s what one participant had to say: NCBI creates an environment where people from all walks of life feel comfortable discussing their experiences and learning from one another. NCBI builds bridges in our community by facilitating conversations around identity issues. NCBI’s work reminds us that understanding people’s complex experiences is a lifelong pursuit and that we are better off when we try to empathize with people. – Eric Mora, Salinas A diverse group of residents talk about race in CommUNITY Conversations. In the coming year, look for CommUNITY Conversations on anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia; a youth panel and forum to hear young people’s perspectives and experiences of racism and other forms of discrimination; and a workshop on strengthening leadership for racial equity. We are also in the planning stages for a regional conference to address white privilege and supremacy. Because grant money is unpredictable, and in order to keep our programs accessible to all members of our community, your donations are extremely important. Your ongoing donations and dedication to the work of NCBI helps to keep the spirit of social justice alive; quite necessary in these troubling times. We thank you in advance for renewing your membership as a Friend of NCBI; your contribution to keeping social justice in the forefront of our community. |
