2018 Accomplishments
What Has NCBI Been Up To In the Past Year?
- Funded by donations from Monterey County Gives, our chapter produced a highly successful series of workshops entitled “Recommitting to End Racism”:
- Finding Common Ground, to practice skills for finding shared humanity around potentially emotionally-charged issues, like racism, transphobia and immigrant rights.
- What Stands Between Us, provided an opportunity to have respectful conversations about race and racism.
- We are grateful for the support of workshop co-sponsors: Whites for Racial Equity; CSUMB Health and Wellness Services; CSUMB NCBI Campus Affiliate; NAACP Monterey County Branch; Middlebury Institute for International Studies Center for Conflict Studies; Rainbow Speakers; Collectivize Monterey County; MILPA; Restorative Justice Partners; ACLU Monterey County.
- Participated in and/or co-sponsored community events, including the commemoration of the Poor People’s March, vigil for victims of the Tree of Life Jewish congregation, the Martin Luther King, Jr. March, Monterey PRIDE, United Nations Association Human Rights Day, Walk of Remembrance for the Chinese Village, Women’s March, and many more.
- Supported Seaside High School student leaders in facilitating Welcoming Diversity workshops to prevent bullying and divisiveness in their school. Awarded 3 graduating high school seniors scholarships for their outstanding contributions as NCBI leaders.
- NCBI has been awarded a grant from The California Endowment for the 2nd year to continue a racial equity and racial healing pilot program, in partnership with the National Compadres Network, at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus,
- This Spring we completed a 2-year Four Cities United project, funded by the California Board of Corrections, to improve relationships between community and law enforcement in South Monterey County.
- Facilitated Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conversations at local businesses and organizations, including a medical residency program.
- NCBI members continue to take leadership in social justice advocacy in our local community and beyond.
