NCBI creates communities in which everyone wants to belong!

CommUNITY
Conversations
In 2019 we continued our series of workshops,
CommUNITY Conversations,
which included:
What Stands Between Us, Part 2
,
where we used the work of Lee Mun Wah to have respectful conversations about race and racism.
|
A
showing and discussion of
The Latino List
,
a documentary made up of short, intimate interviews featuring people in the Latinx community who work in a diverse cross-section of disciplines from politics, theater, science, music, business, government and journalism.
NCBI builds bridges in our community by facilitating conversations around identity issues. NCBI’s work reminds us that understanding people’s complex experiences is a lifelong pursuit and that we are better off when we try to empathize with people. – Eric Mora, Salinas
Whites Working to End Racism
, facilitated by Ann Todd Jealous, retired MFT, and Caroline Haskell, LCSW, to help participants who identify as white to deepen their skills for being an effective ally to members of targeted racial groups.

Earlier this year NCBI provided support for students and faculty at Monterey High School following racist social media incidents. We are now working with administrators, faculty and students to build NCBI teams in all MPUSD high schools in the 2019/20 school year. We are excited about new diversity, equity and inclusion programs with these young leaders!
Training for Organizations
In 2019, we continued our partnership with National Compadres Network, providing training and facilitation for Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, connected to the Towards Equity in Monterey County Project.
Community Partnerships
This year marked the 10th Annual Walk of Remembrance for the Chinese Fishing Village in Pacific Grove, where NCBI facilitated community discussion about Ally-ship.
NCBI also co-sponsored many community events, including the Women’s March; PRIDE Monterey Peninsula; the Seaside march honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.; a vigil for immigrant rights, and more.
NCBI at CSU Monterey Bay
NCBI Community Chapter and the Campus Affiliate at CSUMB collaborated on training for homeless youth in Salinas. The Campus Affiliate also hosted an event to bring together campus and community NCBI leaders to plan joint activities.
