2018 CSUMB Affiliate

CSUMB NCBI College Affiliate Article for NCBI Monterey County Chapter Big news for NCBI@CSUMB! Director of the NCBI campus affiliate, Caroline Haskell, LCSW, BCD will be retiring from CSU Monterey Bay at the end of the Spring 2019 semester. Prior to being hired by CSUMB in 1996, Caroline was a proud member of the Monterey County Chapter NCBI. In 1998 as the founding director of CSUMB’s Personal Growth and Counseling Center, Caroline initiated, developed and led the NCBI chapter at CSUMB. Gary Rodriguez, Margaret Keith, and Lynne White Dixon are long time members of the campus affiliate. In 2016, as an MSW student, I lobbied the PGCC and MSW department for an internship at the PGCC focused on the self-care of student activists. Recognizing an opportunity to expand the NCBI campus affiliate, Caroline Haskell and Lynne White Dixon, knowing my past association with the Monterey County Branch NCBI hired me as an MSW intern with the role of coordinating the campus affiliate chapter. Each semester we do one or two 1-day workshops and at the beginning of each academic year, we do a special ½ day training for incoming MSW students as part of their orientation. We have built a core team of a dozen facilitators and have revived the 10 Principles of NCBI classroom presentation originated by Caroline and Lynne. In the Fall 2017-Spring 2018 academic year we did 25 classroom presentations. In Fall 2018 alone we did another 33! Now, only a month into the Spring 2019 semester we already have another 25 reservations for classroom presentations and are continuing to build a positive reputation across campus. In February 2018, I was nominated, along with the Monterey County Chapter’s Jesse Tamayo, to be a part of the NCBI Leadership Development Initiative. In November 2018, our team participated in the first national campus webinar with over a dozen other campuses on the topic of Free Speech vs. Hate Speech. Coming on the heels of that, Caroline and I facilitated one of Monterey County NCBI’s CommUNITY Conversations and will be co-facilitating the March 2019 Conversation as well. I am extraordinarily grateful for the leadership of Fred and Ann Jealous, Sue Parris and Elena Loomis, Caroline Haskell, Lynne White Dixon, Margaret Keith and Gary Rodriguez who, along with others, have kept NCBI moving forward for decades. I am glad to be part of the NCBI family and to play my role in strengthening the college affiliate and continuing our relationship with the Monterey County Chapter. All for One, and One for All!
