2022 American Indians 101

According to a recent study by the Native run nonprofit IllumiNatives, 87% of United States schools don’t cover Native American history beyond 1900. So, it’s not surprising that many non-Natives hold biases and misinformation, and that Native people are often stereotyped or made invisible.

Join us for American Indians 101, an introductory presentation about American Indians in the United States. It includes information about tribes, treaties, tribal governance, tribal enrollment, reservations, and current issues in Indian country.

Rebecca Hernandez, PhD is Warm Springs/Mescalero Apache and her academic expertise is in American Studies with a concentration in American Indian Studies and Visual Culture. Dr. Hernandez is currently the Director of the American Indian Resource Center at UC Santa Cruz, where she is focused on the retention of Native students and developing programs that promote a better understanding of American Indian culture(s) and lifeways at UCSC.
