“It is an amazing gift to have adults both young and old as mentors who volunteer through NCBI. They help facilitate the leadership trainings and workshops. I have attended two of the leadership trainings where the main focus is working to end the discrimination and bullying based on race, religion, gender and sexual orientation. I make it a priority to share with people the skills I have learned through the NCBI training and make a beautiful place for everyone. Thank you NCBI!”

Key Concepts for Welcoming Diversity:

1.  Guilt is the glue that holds prejudice in place.

2.  Every issue and every person counts!
3.  To shift attitudes, hear personal stories.
4.  Skills training leads to empowerment.
5.  Leaders lead best when they are treated well.
6.  Teams are necessary for systemic change.

NCBI School Programs and Scholarship Drive

Dear Friends of NCBI,

During this graduation season, the board and staff of NCBI Monterey County invite you to celebrate with us the success of our high school programs and the accomplishments of our graduating high school seniors and NCBI club members.

This year, we are presenting six scholarships to six worthy high school seniors from Marina and Carmel High School for a total of $2000.  (Although there were no Seaside High NCBI graduates this year, there was a huge class last year — these tend to fluctuate through the years)  We are also donating $350 each to the high school club accounts of NCBI teams at Seaside and Marina High.

Truly, our high school teams are at the very heart of our diversity and leadership training program and we are working everyday to keep these programs well resourced.  With your added financial support we will be able keep these programs going strong, expand into Salinas, Greenfield and King City and invest in the advanced training of our staff and board members in diversity and leadership skills development through our NCBI national leadership institute.

We encourage you to pass along this newsletter to others who believe in our mission of eliminating every form of discrimination and intolerance and who support our school and community programs such as  NCBI Diversity & Inclusion, Cultural Competency and Conflict Resolution.

And please consider giving generously to our scholarship drive in support of our school programs and leadership trainings.

We also invite you to share your own thoughts on diversity and social justice on our Facebook page at NCBI Monterey County, or on our new website at NCBIMonterey.org.

Again from all of us at NCBI, thank you for your continued support of our programs and our next generation of leaders!

Chapter Director Sue Parris on NCBI in Schools

Dear Friends …

The NCBI Monterey County Board of Directors held its first strategic planning session in 1993 (That’s right, more than 20 years ago. Watch for more about this milestone in our next newsletter.) There was a lively discussion at that meeting about choosing among the many possible diversity and social justice issues and constituencies as the focus of our chapter’s work. However, all board members were in agreement that we should make working with young people primary.

Founding Board members Bill Melndez, Nancy Leon, Warner Davis, Rosi Edwards, Fred Jealous and several others, participated in program design and early outreach to schools. Richard Moss and Danielle Shillcock were our pioneering School Liaisons, establishing our first campus team at Seaside High School with the enthusiastic support of SHS Librarian Elena Loomis

Since that time, our chapter has delivered Welcoming Diversity, conflict resolution and related programs to thousands of elementary, middle and high school students in schools all over Monterey County. We have developed and supported ongoing student/staff teams on eight campuses. Hundreds of student leaders have provided training to their peers, and have served as diversity resources and advisers in their schools. Many have also led NCBI programs in other schools and in the community. We are particularly pleased and grateful to NCBI High School alumni* who continue to contribute their leadership and talent to our programs.  Read more…

Sincerely,
Sue Parris

Many thanks to the students, staff and volunteers who contributed their time and effort, and to Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation and the City of Seaside Mayor’s Youth Fund, for financial support that made the training possible.
